As many as 80,000 people are expected to attend Cirque du Soleil’s run of shows slated for University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale in June. The Montreal-based troupe also is expected to help fill West Valley hotel rooms during the slow summer season, said Glendale spokesman Jerry McCoy.

“One of the benefits of hosting such a large-scale show is there are a lot of people from out of town involved in the event production,” McCoy said. “These show performers, event staff and other Cirque employees will be staying in hotel properties in Glendale while they are in town. This translates to more than 5,000 hotel room nights.”

Cirque will stage its summer “Kooza” performance for 38 shows from June 8 through July 15. The show will take place under a 2,500-person big top in the UOP Stadium parking area, with tickets ranging from $43.50 to $143.50 including fees. The Grand Chapiteau tent is air-conditioned.

If demand persists, the troupe could add more shows, Cirque du Soleil representatives said.

The artsy circus previously held its Phoenix performances at WestWorld in Scottsdale. Cirque du Soleil also has shows running in Las Vegas and tours globally.

Attracting the high-end circus is part of UOP Stadium’s efforts to secure more than football games and high school graduations to the venue — especially during the summer, when the Arizona Cardinals aren’t playing.

“We are obviously delighted to have our friends from Cirque here for 38 performances. They had their choice of locations in the Valley, but we feel our location, campus footprint and marketing assistance factored into their decision to place the event in our parking lot,” said stadium General Manager Peter Sullivan.

The shows also should bring more customer traffic to Westgate City Center during the traditionally slow summer season. Westgate benefited from the Phoenix Coyotes recent playoff run, and a Tanger Outlet Mall is being built near the Glendale complex, which went into foreclosure last year.
